Chess Newsletter

September 2005

The most significant event for this month was that the Watauga Chess Club has moved its meeting place from the Watauga Recreation Center to the First American Title Company at 6200 Colleyville Blvd. in Colleyville.  The City of Watauga was very kind to have hosted this club for the past 4 years.  The club is now past the Recreations Center’s ability to host this growing organization.  This move will also allow the adults to play chess later in the evening, which many of the adult players enjoy.  It also provides more room for the scholastic players and their parents.  While this space will be adequate for now, the club is still looking for someplace larger.

As we mentioned last month, several local libraries are starting chess programs for their members.  They all want more adult and high school volunteers, so if you or someone you know wants to help, here are the contacts:

Colleyville – John Schanot (817) 503-1160

Euless – JoAnn Rogers (817) 685-1480

Hurst – Beverly Kirkendall (817) 788-7302

North Richland Hills – Liz Brockman (817) 427-6818

Watauga – Linda Evers (817) 514-5866

We also have someone who wants to start a chess club in Decatur.  If you know of any chess players in that area, let us know and we will see that chess sets are available.

There is also a new chess club at The Guyer High School in Denton.  Rob Jones is the leader of that club.  Rob can be reached through: jonessoc@juno.com

Also, according to Greg Pease, “a new chess club has been formed in Denton, Texas.  We are meeting each Monday night at the North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St., in Denton.  The library phone number is 940-349-8756.  Play begins at 6:00 pm.  It is open to the public and free of charge.  Sets are provided as well as some basic instruction.  There are players of all strengths that are attending, including IM Doug Root and his wife WIM Alexey Root.  Alexey is also working with local schools to help instruct interested students. The club is sponsored by the Denton Public Library system.”  Contact the library if you want more information.

Scholastic chess begins this Saturday at the Colleyville Library.  This will be an unrated tournament intended for those players who haven’t played in a tournament previously and for those parents wanting to know how to help get their children involved in tournaments.  There’s still room left, so if you want to attend, be at the library at 9:00 am this Saturday.

The subsequent tournament will be at St. Vincent’s in Bedford on October 1.  The announcement and entry form are attached.  To find additional tournaments, go to my website and click on My Links and then on Scholastic Chess Tournaments.

More next month . . .
