This is where our first tournament, Many Springs Open #1 is showcased.

This tournament was played on September 23rd, 2001. It was our
first U.S. Chess Federation rated chess tournament. It was successful beyond
any expectations we envisioned.

When this tournament was being planned, it was felt that its name should relate to
the Watauga Chess Club and the City of Watauga. Consequently, the name Many
Springs was selected. Watauga is Cherokee Indian for village of many springs.

This tournament was conceived and brought to fruition by Aurelio Gonzalez, Jr.,
Bill Maier, Kent Gordon, and Harmon Throneberry with the help of other Club
members who graciously volunteered their services.

The following Club members were very instrumental in the success of our first
tournament by their actions before, during, and/or after the tournament:

    Paul J. Huspeni
    Robert S. Van Housen
    Joe Riley
    Doug Hawkins, Jr.

Aurelio Gonzalez, Jr.
    Bill Maier
    Earnest Keyser
    Kent Gordon
    Harmon Throneberry

Other Club members were very supportive of this endeavor.

Tournaments results may be viewed here.

Pictures from the tournament may be seen here.

This tournament would not have been possible without the assistance of the
Club members who volunteered their time and efforts to make it happen.
